First book review spotted

Thursday May 12 2005
I just discovered the first real review of the Superboek PHP5, the advanced PHP5 book I've written with Wouter Tengeler. It was reviewed in Livre, an Open Source magazine.
When someone hits the market with a book having the word superbook in it's title, one may expect quite a lot. Tengeler and van Hylckama Vlieg live up to the expectations and have delivered a book which will please both hardcore and hobby programmers. Detailed, extensive and written in uncomplicated and clear Dutch.Livre
Now that's quite nice I'd say! On a personal note: I've just moved to a new appartment which turned out to be an awful lot of work. I'll need quite some time to arrange everything at the new place which is why updates will be sorta slow for a while I'm afraid. Please bear with me while I unpack!

Google Web Accellerator: all hail to the spammers

Friday May 6 2005
It's evil...Of course a lot of people have already spilled their guts about Google's new Web Accellerator but being the author of Pivot's anti-spam software I felt obliged to say some words about it as well. First things first: Pivot Blacklist will block any attempt to post a comment by anyone using the if you have the most important spam blocking options enabled.

UPDATED: it gets worse, even... (continue reading...)

Blazing speed with PHP's memcache extension

Friday May 6 2005
I've recently discovered something truly awesome that many of you might not know about: the extension for PHP. The extension can be obtained from the PECL website. The memcache extension is an interface to the memcached daemon which was originally developed by Danga Interactive. It's purpose at the time was speeding up LiveJournal.com which is a very heavy-traffic website. In this article I'll explain what the memcache extension is and how it can help you increase the performance of any dynamic website dramatically. (continue reading...)

PHP Conference Day 3

Wednesday May 4 2005
I thought I'd write a small note while waiting for the closing keynotes on the PHP Conference 2005 Spring Edition. Today was somewhat disappointing. I guess I choose the wrong sessions to attend. While yesterday was really a full day of learning new things, today I mostly heard things I already know about which is why I didn't blog during the sessions I attended. I'll write some closing notes about the conference in general tonight or tomorrow.

Now let's go to the closing keynotes and see if I'll win a free ticket for the next conference!

Real Life Design Patterns - PHP Conference day 2

Tuesday May 3 2005
Design patterns are standard solutions to common problems in software architecture. They're independent of the programming language and ease the communication between the developers. Typically they describe the interaction of classes and objects. This is the subject of this presentation by Stephan Schmidt.

Zeev Suraski - PHP Conference day 2

Tuesday May 3 2005
ForumAs promised, today I'll be blogging live from the PHP Conference. Right now I'm listening to Zeev Suraski on a presentation on PHP as an integration platform. He states that PHP5 is the first version of PHP that allows for real Object Oriented development. Some of it's integration capabilities relate to Web Services, C/C++, Java and Perl and COM/.NET. Of course all major databases are supported including the commercial ones. Supports for standards is extremely extensive and includes XML, LDAP, SNMP, IMAP and much more.

PHP Conference, day 1

Monday May 2 2005
Conference logo
Today was the first day of the PHP Conference in Amsterdam. I attended the highly interesting full-day session by Laura Thomson and Luke Welling on and best practices. It turned out to be an excellent choice. Thanks to this presentation I've 'discovered' the really cool mysqli extension that harnesses the full power of MySQL 4.1 under PHP5. In fact my hands were itching to try it out when I got home. The OO interface really shines. If you haven't checked it out yet you definitely should! I planned to write more about today than you'll find when you click the more-link but unfortunately the presentation they gave isn't yet available online yet and I didn't take my own notes. (stupid!). I'll dive into some of the more interesting issues in more depth when I've toyed around with them a bit more. For now just some random notes on the session. (continue reading...)
