They Live - Just a movie, right?

A while ago I saw this photoshopped image which I thought looked rather cool. I had no idea about the movie "They Live by John Carpenter that inspired the person who created the image. Of course it triggered me to check out the movie and watch it.
We are living in an artificially induced state of consciousness that resembles sleep. The poor and the underclass are growing. Racial justice and human rights are nonexistent.
They have created a repressive society and we are their unwitting accomplices ...their intention to rule rests with the annihilation of consciousness.
We have been lulled into a trance.
They have made us indifferent, to ourselves, to others, we are focused only on our own gain. They are safe as long as they are not discovered ...that is their primary method of survival. Keep us asleep, keep us selfish, keep us sedated... [...]
Rebel transmission in John Carpenter's "They Live"
I loved it! A world in which people are kept in some sort of artificially induced sleep in order to obey, to not question authority and to do whatever those who hold the power desire. One would need to literally put on some special glasses in order to see what was really happening with the world and with humanity as a whole. Without the glasses no one would ever see. The glasses were the only thing that could reveal the true face of those who hold the power. The movie's plot was just excellent. What an awesome concept! The execution could have been better I guess but I still enjoyed it a lot. I can understand how this movie didn't score all that well when it was released but gained a true cult status later on. If you're into cult sci-fi movies you should definitely give this flick a try.
After watching the movie I realized this was of course just an awesome movie scenario. People not thinking for themselves anymore, being misguided by the powers that be. Hidden agenda's behind the scenes. A thing like that could NEVER happen for real of course! It's too crazy to even think of. Right?

When I first saw The Matrix I thought it was really original but later on I figured it really isn’t. “Dark City” is another one of those great movies with the same plot as The Matrix (and older too) for example.

Of course there are books on a similar topic way before this book, but I am pretty confident this was a precursor to 1984 and similar books.
The matrix was somewhat a ripoff from the Gibson) neuromancer trilogy, melded with philip k dick and 1984.
Oh and did I mention I am a total sci-fi nerd? :)

But I couldn’t download the dam thing. Somehow, the site wouldn’t let me, and it was the only movie that I couldn’t download. So I went to Google looking for a solution, and this is where Google brought me.
Having read all the comments, I decided to find it and rent it. Success at last! I think I may have watched it a half dozen times before it sank in, and I said Holly Sh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I imagine everyone who contributed with a comment in your thread said the same thing, or worse! But the comment that really, really hit the nail right on the head was that last comment (Ryan Swayze), I think that dude knows what he’s talking about. This Sh*
