Death of the A-List? The $10000 blog challenge

Friday Mar 3 2006

Take a look at the interlinking of the top fifty blogs. Take special note of the incest happening within the very top.

The blogger aristocracy can deny it until they are blue in the face, but the fact remains that many in the only link to others in the Top 100.

I’m not going to name names, but go through the list, take special note of the search related blogs, and the entire lack out outbound linkage. Some blogs in the list contain no outbound links in over 75% of the posts. Isn’t blogging supposed to be about community? How can we have a community that doesn’t link to each other?

Now here's an interesting statement. I agree with John wholeheartedly! I've wondered about several blogs in the Technorati top 100 before (what's so great about them and why is everybody linking to them?). It seems I'm not the only one. John makes an interesting proposal in an attempt to crush the 'A-List'. Being the cyber anarchist that I am, I'm game!

In this article is explaining how incestuous the upper really is. In an attempt to change this he makes the following proposal:

So I propose a change in blogging. I challenge every blogger to post links to new blogs, unknown blogs and blogs not in the Technorati’s Top 100. And I’ll pay out a total of $10,000 to those who participate.John Scott

I really love this idea. Besides the fact that this is a great attempt to try and tear down the never-changing '' of blogs that contains plenty of blogs that aren't all that interesting at all (at least they aren't to me) it's also an excellent way for everybody who loves reading blogs or write on their own blogs to go out and discover new 'hidden gems'. Blogs that contain killer content but just aren't 'famous' enough to be discovered easily. And if one of those participating manages to snag the first prize of $3000, so much the better!

Therefore, John, you have my cooperation. For all of you readers it means you can prepare for a lot of links to excellent weblogs that are relevant to the content I'm writing here myself. I'm sure it will be an interesting and enlightening journey! We're gonna share some serious link-love in the next six months to come!
