I especially like the “Christoph Boecken – Some rights reserved” in the footer of his site… at least he’s not taking all the credit.
For those out there who are protective about your content Copyscape is your friend.

I am surprised though at your apparent surprise of this. I mean, this is what the Internet means: people ripping off other peoples work. Its the ugly part that balances out the great parts of the Internet.

I know how it feels, this week my site got (partially) ripped, and it sucks. I immediately wanted to own some kind of device that I saw someone mentioned in a famous bash.org quote: “i’m going to become rich and famous after i invent a device that allows you to stab people in the face over the internet”.
After an hour or so the first rage is over, but still it is so very lame to just steal someone’s hard work and use it for your self.
But unauthorized copying isn’t just something that only individuals do; this morning I received an email from my father. He told me the CDA (the largest political party in The Netherlands) used one of his photos in their upcoming elections campaign.
I guess it is the price you have to pay when you publish on the internet. People will steal or copy it, and in most cases you will never know.

marco: OK, agreed, this is indeed quite freaky. Just ripping a design is not weird, but ripping the about page! freaky!

He hasn’t got response yet, but I think it is an offer they can’t refuse. Because if they do refuse, it will cost them more, according to the dutch photographer association guidelines.

Normally this would indeed be the way to go. I’ve been ripped off before and after some email contact the case was resolved. However this one was different.
This guy didn’t only copy my design but he also took large parts of my texts. To be precise, he copied the following ones:
The Net is Dead – version 4.0
Almost Valid XHTML
and the most important one:
My About page
Copying these texts without attribution is a violation of the Creative Commons license. My texts may be used but not when presented as if they were someone else’s work.
Now, because he copied the About page I was 100% sure he read this passage:
He carefully omitted this passage in his own version of my About page. Because of this I knew for 100% sure he didn’t miss that statement. Believe me, I’m a nice guy (most of the time) and I’m always happy to help people out with web design issues but stealing my stuff is the one thing NOT to do.
So in case you wondered, now you know why.

Yes, I stole 99% of the design, just modified it a little bit and of course converted it to Wordpress. Yes, I also stole three articles, translated them and presented them as mine. And although there is no excuse for what I’ve done, I feel deeply sorry. Almost one week later, I couldn’t say why I did it. I guess I wanted too much in too little time. I wanted to be a part of the real blogosphere, and I figured a perfect design, which you delivered, could be a good starting point.
And although it sounds ridiculous, I didn’t stole those three articles just for fun but for the content, on which I agree with every word.
It must be kinda naive to think that such a ripoff could be undiscovered by the community, especially if the design is from a Technorati-Top 1000 Blogger. You should be proud of your readers, Marco.
The blogger Jeriko is dead for now. And although I did all this bullshit, I have to say that I enjoyed being a blogger, and somewhere in the future, I think I might try it another time. With all the consequences, and of course with open cards from the beginning.
Marco, you did a great job with your design and almost any article is a pleasure to read. Good luck for your future as a freelancer.

Thank you for stopping by here on my site. I realize it takes some courage to do so. I appreciate it and of course I accept your apologies.
I can see where you’re coming from with wanting to be part of the blogosphere and with wanting everything ‘right now’. My feelings were the same when I started this site. Reality however shows it takes tons and tons of time to really build something. Right now, after almost 1.5 years of blogging this site has about 500-600 unique visitors per day which is still rather little. The readers here however tend to be of the returning kind which is more important than huge numbers of visitors. The insightful comments are more important as well.
The ‘start blogging and get rich and famous NOW!’-kind of crap articles you find on the web here and there are definitely a load of nosense.
I must honestly admit you did a great job in converting this template to WP even though it was ‘illegal’. Maybe you’d like to take a shot at porting Lush to WordPress. It would definitely give you a head start in links to your own blog if you were to start blogging again since that Template is quite popular in the Typo scene. If I had the time I’d do it myself but that’s not going to happen any time soon unfortunately.
Anyway, enough rambling. Do start blogging again! It’s too much fun to quit! And once more: apologies accepted!

I like your design very much and I took a screenshot to my collection because I like extraordinary designs and pin them on my pinwand to get inspired from it. I think that is a nice way honoring a design.
