Taking the plunge: I'm a freelancer now!
The past few weeks have been weird and filled with uncertainty. I've lost quite a lot of sleep while trying to decide whether I would take the plunge or not but I finally managed to come to a decision. Freelancer is what I'll be! Starting this monday I'll be an independent developer and designer, ready to (hopefully) rock the internet with interesting projects in the field of PHP programming, XHTML/CSS, AJAX techniques and design.
The decision has definitely not been easy. Pareto, the company for which I've been working in the past year has been great to me and I've had a lot of fun with all the nice collegues there. Yet I felt the need to move on and take the next 'milestone size step' in my professional life. A step with an importance of the same magnitude as the one I took back in 1999 when I decided I should quit my university study to become an internet specialist. A step I didn't ever regret! I hope I'll be looking back at this next step in the same way a couple of years from now.
In the next couple of months to come I'm 'booked' immediately except for smaller jobs such as designing xhtml templates, small code jobs or some consultancy. In spring however everything is still possible. In the meanwhile I'm also cooking up something nice with the fine people of Backbase about which I'll tell you more later. Then there's the Dutch Directions project which is hopefully going to make some serious impact in the Netherlands as well.
The future definitely looks bright. I'm getting ready to do some serious great stuff in 2006. I'd like to thank everyone who supported me in the process that lead to my decision, especially my wonderful girlfriend Renie. Now excuse me while I'm getting ready to make it all happen!

Still, it’s great to work as your own boss. I’d definitely still do it if I didn’t have my son.

Its nice to see that you are going freelance. I’m sure it will work out nicely because they are a lot of people in Holland willing to hire guys like you.
May I ask you at which University you used to study? At the moment I take computer science in Utrecht which I’m a bit dissapointed about. But unline you I won’t quit, in fact I try to freelance myself as a 1 persons company, work for a internet company and study at the same time :).
Even though you will be a competitor of me, good luck and lets stop the dutch internet market from sucking :)

However, from someone who’s been there a small word of warning.. watch the ‘cabin fever’, it nearly had me on so many days sat on my own in the same room 90% of the time.
Good Luck!
